I'm planning a recital/concert and would like to do a set of pieces which use texts from Song of Songs. I
plan to use some Lassus settings and the Purcell "My Beloved Spake". Beyond that, I'm open to suggestions.
Can anyone help?

Subject: Re : Song of Songs
Here follows the result on the search
"Song of Songs" (38 occurrences) in different fields (title, source of text and key-words). But one can
in a second approach look on a given title, because the encoders did not always know about the origin of the text
if it is not written on the score. So I just did it to see on "Tota pulchra es"
because I was thinking on the setting of Maurice Durufle and it did not appear in the first search. I send you
therefore a second list on "Tota Pulchra es" as a title (18 occurrences). If someone wishes to go further,
one could do it for other titles. If I do not answer to further questions in the next days, do not worry : I will
be absent from Strasbourg the whole next week.

collection. Most of the set are SSATTB, with one SSATB. The settings are lovely.

Note that while Durufle's "Tota pulchra es" text shares the common
theme of adoration with the Song of Songs, it and several others comes from the Liber Usualis, and thus contain
anachronistic references to Mary. Another text with great consonance is the psalm, "Like as the hart";
Herbert Howells's setting is smokey and sensual.
Getting back to the Song of Songs, there are plenty of settings for
English text, "My beloved spake". I'm not sure that you'd want to
reuse that particular text after the vivid word painting in Purcell's
setting, but one setting that comes to mind immediately is by Patrick Hadley. Healey Willan also has a "Rise
up, my love".
Less frequently used is the text, "I am the rose of Sharon". There's
one by William Billings which is sort of interesting as an example of
composition by the self-taught early American composer, though I find
Billings's technique of splicing unrelated ditties together somewhat
annoying. I've also seen a setting of "I sat down under his shadow",
in one of Oxford University Press's collections, but the composer's
name escapes me at the moment.
Bear in mind the solo setting of "Nigra sum" (I am dark and radiant)
from Monteverdi's 1610 Vespers.
As long as you are exploring the textual possibilities, I cannot
recommend strongly enough Marcia Falk's translation and studies in _The Song of Songs_, published by HarperCollins,
ISBN 0-06-062339-X. There are references to other studies, including ones which will give you some idea what camphire
and spikenard are. Even if you might not have time to read it while preparing for your recital, it makes a beautiful
gift for someone you love.

Daniel Pinkham's "Wedding Cantata" is a beautiful setting of the

probably been 20 years since I sang it, but it would be well worth
looking into. What a great idea for a program!

A very nice suite of texts from the Songs of Solomon is the 1972 "Canticum
canticorum" for 5-6 pt. unaccompanied chorus by Wilhelm Weismann. The 35 page score (Latin texts) was published
in 1974 by Deutcher Verlag fur Musik, Leipzig [DVfM 7640] and consists of three movements:
I Sub umbra illius - SSATB
II Surge, aquilo, et veni auster - SSATB
III Ecce, tu pulchra es - SSATBB
The work is approximately 18 minutes long and is of moderate + difficulty. I don't think the piece is that widely
known in the US, but IMO it would be a nice addition to a concert program of your theme.

My thanks to all of you for your suggestions regarding the Song of Solomon; as a newcomer to Internet I didn't
know about last year's discussion until several of you mentioned it, and once I accessed it (via TurboGopher, another
first for me!), it was also useful. Now if only I could get OCLC to print to MY Mac instead of the library's (the
librarian and everyone else has that problem, too.)
Following is a list of all the pieces
suggested, many by two or more
persons, with the suggester's comments for little-known ones:
Purcell My Beloved Spake
Billings I charge you, O Jerusalem (Broude)
I am come into my Garden (Broude)
I am the rose of Sharon (Broude Bros. WW7)
Gaultier Osculetur me (Gaultier may be located in Heyer's guide to
collected works and monuments-look under the title, I seem to remember
finding it at the back of one of the volumes of the complete works of
Banchieri-it seems he based a Mass on it (not published in a modern performance
edition).)
Bouzignac Vulnerasti cor meum (Lawson Gould)
Palestrina The 24 5-pt motets of Canticum Canticorum (Theodore
Presser);especially suggested:
Quam pulchri sunt
Duo ubera tua
Veni dilecti me
Edwin Fissinger Set Me As A Seal (Jenson (411-190034)/Walton Music)
Healey Willan Rise up, my love, my fair one (Oxford No. 94.306)
Supply Belcher Farmington (Published privately by Walter S.
Collins (his e-mail address is Wcollins@Colorado.EDU).) (I obtained
this piece from Walter and will use it; it is quite lovely.)
Patrick Hadley My beloved spake
Pablo Casals Tota pulchra (Broude Brothers AB 122-4 SSAATTBB)
Pablo Casals Nigra Sum (SA)
Bairstow Edward I Sat Down Under His Shadow (Oxford 43.002)
William Walton. Set Me as a Seal(in an Oxford Carols for Choirs collection.)
"Der Alte Tryptich fur Bonhoeffer", written by Herman Berlinski, Heinz
Werner Zimmerman, and Robert Helmschrott. It had several texts Dietrich
Bonhoeffer and his fiancee hoped to use in a wedding that were from the
Song of Solomon. Some of the forces were beyond what you listed,
percussion, violin, and organ come to mind. Still, if you EVER get a chance
to hear it, don't miss it!

both Song of Songs and Tota pulchra was forwarded to me by Peter J. McCarthy (University of Delaware), bless him!
It produced 56 pieces, including the Palestrina ones, and some others that sound extremely interesting; here's
hoping that I can get reference copies or even single copies from overseas publishers. If anyone is willing to
loan me a copy of any of the above, I will reimburse you for postage and
return the music promptly and in good condition.

I have written a "Three Passages from the Song of Solomon" in English for
SATB choir a cappella.
1) Rise Up My Love
2) I Sleep, But My Heart Waketh
3) Set Me As A Seal
The New York Concert Singers (Juditgh Clurman) and the National Lutheran Choir (Larry Fleming) have performed
the "Set Me As A Seal" and the William Baker Singers have performed all three, and I have also otherwise conducted
all three. Interested?
